Join us at the Durham Art Gallery for our 2025 Creative Skill Sharing Workshop Series.

This workshop will explore off loom bead weaving techniques and the exciting world of beads!

We will explore mainly the peyote stitch and will explore ladder, brick and fringe technique also. Larger format plastic beads will be used to understand technique and build on foundational stitches and the many ways beads can be connected.

You will be able to stay within the larger format plastic beads or switch to small 11/0 sized delica beads to create a small pendant, keychain or object of your choosing.

This is a workshop for bead weaving beginners, folks looking to develop bead techniques and beaders who want to sit and bead together - come and explore!

INSTRUCTOR: Natalie Vanderzand is a multi-disciplinary artist mainly working in the world of contemporary jewellery with a particular focus on beadwork. Natalie completed her BFA from NSCAD university in Halifax, Nova Scotia / 2015. She now lives and works in her studio on the Saugeen Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. Natalie has exhibited her work across Canada and internationally; currently with beadwork being exhibited in Finland as part of the Koru8 Exhibition.

Natalie’s work focuses on place, the notion of home and draws inspiration from the natural world; the flora and fauna, land and landscapes lived in and experienced, bodies of water, riverways, trees and expansive forests, the gardens sowed and flowers blooming.

Made possible by funding from the Community Foundation of Grey Bruce.
